Schools are the foundation of today’s education system. While getting good grades may be an indicator of hard work, there is much more to being successful.
Why Is School Not Enough?
Education provided in schools is mostly universal. Schools try to adopt a one-size-fits-all approach to education, and this is predestined to fail, as students are highly individual. Some may have a great grasp of mathematics but struggle in literature, while others may need more support in biology or physics. Unfortunately, schools don’t usually tackle this problem.
Nearly everyone in a modern country has to attend school, and nearly every student gets a similar education. Once you finish school, you’ll only have as much knowledge as your friends and schoolmates.
Furthermore, schools have limited lessons that cover only a few industries. Go anywhere in the world, and you’ll find similar subjects: mathematics, chemistry, physics, art, history, and so on. A low variety of lessons can lead to a low variety of students’ interests. If you consider that our current school system was introduced in the 19th century, you’ll quickly understand my point.
Why Is This a Problem?
When students are confronted with a limited view of the possible industries they could work in, they’ll naturally be more attracted to those they see. This leads to many young people not knowing their strengths and working in jobs they don’t like. In the long run, this leads to an unhappy society where individuals can’t live up to their full potential.
What to Do?
As my experience over twelve years of school has shown, the only thing students can do right now is learn by themselves. There is a vast amount of information on the internet in the form of online courses, blog posts, articles, and so on, waiting to be taken in by brilliant minds. Trying different things will help young people find their areas of interest and strengths, ultimately leading to more fulfilling careers and lives.
We live in an ever-changing society, where progress takes place as fast as never before. Huge improvements in AI suggest that a gigantic change in work culture could occur. This makes it even more important to introduce people to learning on their own. Only this way can we ensure that people will stay up-to-date and may be able to keep their jobs.
Summary
The school system has many flaws and can’t cater to individual students’ needs as much as it should. Students should learn on their own and find their strengths and interests. This way, it’s more likely they’ll have fulfilling careers and lives while adapting to the ever-changing society we live in.
